Unraveling the biology of ME/CFS and long COVID
ME/CFS, long COVID and related condition are deeply complex with many different causes and risk factors. On this page, we've collated the published findings, videos, news and blogs from our ME/CFS and long COVID research.
In over 30 years of research into ME/CFS and intense global efforts to understand the biological mechanisms of long COVID, not a single replicable genetic finding had been reported for either, until now.
Our researchers have, for the first time, identified genetic mechanisms causing ME/CFS and long COVID and used this to apply a precision medicine approach - stratifying patients into sub-groups who will likely benefit from targeted treatments.
We’re currently confirming our results in much larger, better characterized patient populations:
- For long COVID we've achieved the first ever reproduction of genetic associations using the All of Us study data as part of a collaboration with Metrodora Foundation.
- For ME/CFS we're using the DecodeME study data as part of the LOCOME (Long Covid and ME) grant.
We're now conducting research to:
- Validate rapid non-invasive tests to detect risks and identify causes of ME/CFS and long COVID in patients
- Identify actively protective biology that may prevent people getting ME/CFS and long COVID and aid recovery
- Identify and validate drug candidates that may be able to treat ME/CFS, long COVID and related conditions
